Designer and maker in glass, metal and wood · Bulgaria
One hand behind every ZAVEL edition, drawing in brass, walnut, bronze, steel and light.
A mirror is a drawing you have to stand in front of. Whatever the material, the line has to survive being made.
Process
Maria draws every ZAVEL edition at full scale before a material is chosen, in one sitting, and keeps the line that survives the drawing. Aster is that line formed in brass; TRACE is the same kind of line engraved into glass with an LED laid along it, so the light inherits the small deviations of the hand rather than correcting them.
The making happens in her Bulgarian workshop and with the casters, metalworkers and glaziers she works beside there. Orbit has a sculpted MDF frame with a hand-applied painted finish, the LITHOS glass keeps the raw upper edge it was cut with because the halo behind it reads better against a broken line, and the blackened steel of Onda meets the glass at a single junction.
What every collection has in common is where the work is stopped. A patina is halted before it evens out, a tool mark is softened and never removed, and a 3000K line is matched to the tint of the glass so the glow stays warm rather than yellow. The decision she makes in every material is where to leave off.
